I have always been most drawn to the look of film over digital. It has qualities that you just can not achieve with digital images. There are now actions and presets that will help emulate the “film look” but it just isn’t the same. I came across a great deal on a Canon 1v a year ago and since my current lenses are all compatible with it I swooped on it. And then is sat. For nearly a year. I procrastinated on shooting that first roll of film because I was afraid that the images would be terrible because I had no idea what I was doing. Finally, a couple of months ago I bit the bullet and shot my first roll. They did not turn out how I would have liked them too. But I learned a lot so that my next roll will be better (hopefully!). I wanted to show them here so that I can keep track of my progress as I shoot more and more film.
What I learned this time: Always double check your settings before you begin! I thought I had metered my roll of Portra 400 at 200 thus over exposing it and unfortunately it was metered at 400 so my images were underexposed. I believe this is why I have a little more grain than I would like in the images (I like film grain but this is too much for my taste). Don’t rush- I found a great little abandoned house and was afraid someone would come along and kick us out so I shot a whole roll in like 10 minutes flat. Next time I want to take more time and really envision each image to create something more artistic and creative. Don’t procrastinate! I can’t learn and get better if I am avoiding shooting that next roll out of fear that all the images will suck…
So here they are, a few images of my sister while she was pregnant.
